Her maternal uncles, professional jazz musicians, and her paternal grandmother Cynthia, a singer, were people haing influence in her interest in jazz. After being suggested by her grandmother Cynthia, in 1992, she entered Susi Earnshaw Theatre School, where she went on Saturdays to further her vocal education and to learn to tap dance. During four years there, she founded a short-lived rap group, Sweet 'n' Sour, with Juliette Ashby, her childhood friend before attending Sylvia Young Theatre School.
