Boonsong Lekagul

Widely regarded as the father of Thai conservation, Dr Boonsong Lekagul  was a well known Thai medical doctor,biologist, ornithologist, herpetologist  and conservationist as well as a biologist, who set up Thailand’s very first polyclinic and the first Thai Conservation Association for Wildlife. He achieved a numerous awards for his contributions to the nature including Honorary member of the World Wide Fund for Nature, 1971 or Knight Commander (Second Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand, 1985, etc.

Born at Songkhla in southern Thailand, he graduated from  Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok in 1933 with a medical degree. He became a strong conservationist after seeing Thailand’s forests and wildlife be destroyed. He also established the Bangkok Bird Club and actively involved in the International Council for Bird Preservation and the World Wildlife Fund.

He was married to Suparb, and had five sons, three of whom are also medical doctors.
