Isao Takahata

Isao Takahata is a Japanese film director, animator, screenwriter and producer who rose to fame internationally through his work as a director of anime films. A unique trademark making him distinctive with other anime directors is that he didn't draw and never worked as an animator until becoming a full-fledged director. His most recent film, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, received a nomination for an Academy Award in the category Best Animated Feature Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

In 1959, he graduated from the University of Tokyo French literature course. The French animated cartoon feature Le Roi et l'Oiseau (The King and the Mockingbird) based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen inspired him to pursue his career. He joined Toei Animation Company as an assistant director to study useful things in animation. In 1971 he left the company and founded an animation studio Ghibli with long-time collaborative partner Hayao Miyazaki.

He frequently collaborates with long-time friend Hayao Miyazaki.
