Famous for his association with a mid-20th century Mexican artistic movement known as the Generacion de la Ruptura, Cuevas created such controversial works and exhibitions as, respectively, "Monument of the Obscene Figure" and "Signs of Life."His shocking, often purposely grotesque work earned him numerous honors, including the 1965 Premio Madeco and the 1977 Latin American Print Biennial Grand Prize.He was a harsh critic of Diego Rivera and other Mexican muralists.
BEFORE FAMEDuring his teenage years, he began a prolific early career as an illustrator.
PERSONAL LIFEHe was born and raised in Mexico City. Both his first wife, Bertha, and his second wife, Beatriz del Carmen, directed the Jose Luis Cuevas Museum in his hometown.
