Liamine Zeroual

Liamine Zeroual was the fourth President of Algeria from 31 January 1994 to 27 April 1999.

Zeroual's background is military, and he had a position as general until his appointment as president. Zeroual joined the Algerian army at age 16 and fought against France during Algeria’s War of Independence. In 1965 Zeroual went to the Soviet Union for military training, after which he was posted to Sidi Bel Abbès, Alg., to head an artillery unit. During the 1970s and ’80s, he rose steadily through the army’s ranks, commanding three of Algeria’s key military regions before being named land forces chief in 1989. After disagreeing with President Chadli Bendjedid about proposals for army reorganisation, he quit in 1990, and briefly became ambassador to Romania. However, after Bendjedid forced resignation in January 1992, his career prospects became more promising. In July 1993, he became Minister of Defense; in January 1994 he was promoted to head of the High Council of State.
