Star of Braveheart and Lethal Weapon who won an Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema Award in 2008. He also starred in The Patriot and Mad Max, and produced Hamlet and The Singing Detective.He wrote and directed The Passion of the Christ, which became a cult classic amongst Christian viewers and received criticism for its excessive violence and its portrayal of Jews.He starred alongside Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon films.

He moved to Australia with his family when he was 12. He performed with Geoffrey Rush at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts.

His paternal grandmother was the famous opera contralto, Eva Mylott. He married Robyn Denise Moore on June 7, 1980 and divorced her in 2011. He has a total of eight children, six sons and two daughters.
