Naomi Kawase

Naomi Kawase, known as Naomi Sento, is a Japanese film director, screenwriter and editor. She was famous for her featured style and themes, frequently paying attention to amateur actors and focusing on documentaries with contemporary issues like the declining birthrate, alienation, and the collapse of traditional family structures. For her works, she has received a number of awards  such as FIPRESCI Prize for Hotaru (2000), Special Prize for Tarachime at Yamagata International Film Festival (2007) and Chevalier Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France (2015). 

Her Nara ometown was the inspiration as well as driving force for her to pursue her filmmaking career. At first, Naomi Kawase enrolled in the Osaka School of Photography, majoring in television production but then changed her choice to focus on film. 

She got married to Takenori Sento in 1997 but divorced him after three years living together.
