Served as the defensive coordinator of the Michigan State Spartans from 2007 to 2014, helping lead the Spartans to a 13-1 season in 2012 and a Rose Bowl victory over Stanford on January 1, 2014. After his tenure with Michigan State, he became head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers in 2015.He won the Broyles Award given to the NCAA's best assistant coach in 2013.He worked under head coach Mark Dantonio at Cincinnati, then followed him to Michigan State.
