The first child born to musician and model Jesse Wood and British television and radio host Fearne Cotton.In the early 2000s, his famous mother hosted a number of British children's programs, including Serious, Smile, and Fingertips.His mother is a close friend of and frequent co-host with television personality Holly Willoughby, and Rex is a contemporary of Willoughby's children Harry (born 2009), Belle (born 2011), and Chester (born 2014).

His parents began their relationship in 2011 and married a little over a year after his birth.

Through his father's first marriage -- to Catherine Boone -- Rex Wood has two older half-siblings. Also on his father's side, Rex is the grandson of Rolling Stones musician Ronnie Wood.
