Japanese film actress Rinko Kikuchi rose to fame for her roles as a fiercely defiant deaf mute Chieko Wataya in her first American film, Babel (2006), which earned her a number of awards, including Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress, Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performance and Palm Springs International Film Festival Award for Best Ensemble Cast, as well as more than ten nominations for her performance. Recently, she caught attentions as the leading role in Guillermo del Toro's 2013 science fiction action film Pacific Rim.
BEFORE FAMEHer talent in acting was discovered when she was 15. She debuted under her birth name, Yuriko Kikuchi, in film Will to Live in 1999.
