His 1978 album, A Wild and Crazy Guy, went 2x platinum in the United States.He became a distinguished comedian, author and banjo player after beginning his productive life as a salesman for guide books at Disneyland.He starred in the 2003 film, Cheaper by the Dozen, with Bonnie Hunt.

While attending UCLA, he appeared on an episode of The Dating Game and worked at night clubs. He dropped out of UCLA at age 21.

He was married to Victoria Tennant from 1985 to 1994. He married his second wife, the New Yorker journalist Anne Stringfield, in July 2007. He became a father for the first time when Stringfield had a child in December 2012.
