ABOUT
Surakiart Sathirathai is a Thai politician who was, until September 19, 2006, a Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand overseeing Foreign Affairs, Education and Culture. He was known for being cabinet member under Thaksin Shinawatra and former candidate for United Nations secretary-general. Surakiart was also the first Thai to earn a doctorate in law from Harvard Law School. He is the current President of the Asian Society of International Law.
BEFORE FAMESurakiart was born to Sunthorn Sathirathai, former Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Thai Ministry of Finance, and Kuakoon Sawat-chuto Sathirathai, Professor in French literature at Chulalongkorn University where he graduated with a First Class (Valedictorian) degree in law. From the late 1980s until the late 1990s, Surakiart taught in the Faculty of Law at Chulalongkorn University and ultimately became Dean. In 1995, he became Thailand’s youngest Finance Minister under Prime Minister Banharn Silapa-Archa.
PERSONAL LIFESurakiart is married to Suthawan Ladawan Sathirathai, a niece to the Queen of Thailand. They have one son, Dr. Santitarn who graduated from Harvard University.
