American journalist who became Editor-in-Chief of the African-American women's magazine Essence in 1981.She was the 1998 recipient of The Magazine Publishers of America's Henry Johnson Fisher Award and was the first African-American woman to receive the honor.She and Condoleezza Rice were both recipients of the prestigious NAACP President's Award during the first decade of the 21st Century.
