Character actor who appeared in such films as High Plains Drifter and Westbound and in such TV series as Bonanza and Gunsmoke. He began as a professional football player and was recruited to western films for his tough and rugged appearance.He played the role of Finn on the television series, Tales of the Vikings, from 1959-1960.He appeared in several Clint Eastwood films, including Every Which Way But Loose (1978) and Bronco Billy (1980).

He played pro football for the Philadelphia Eagles during the late 1940s and early 1950s.
