Remembered best for his chart-topping, certified Gold recording of "Kansas City," this R&B vocalist and musician received a posthumous Grammy Hall of Fame Award for the popular 1959 track.He released his second Billboard Top 40 song, "Let's Work Together (Part 1)," in 1970.He recorded on two Bobby Robinson-owned music labels: Fury Records and Fire Records.

The 1959 hit that made him famous was written in the early part of the decade by Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber.

A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, he was posthumously inducted into his home state's Music Hall of Fame.
