Raymond Erith

Classical architect during the rise of the post-World War II Modernist movement who sought to fuse the past with the present in his designs. His work ranged from cottages and houses to public buildings.He was part of the 1958 reconstruction of Downing Street; he was also elected a Royal Academician in 1959 and was a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission from 1960 until 1973.He came to prominence on the heels of Louis Sullivan's newly established legacy.

He contracted tuberculosis when he was four and was intermittently sick for much of his youth. He received his training at the Architectural Association from 1921 until 1926.

His father, Charles, was a mechanical engineer; he married Pamela Jackson in 1934, with whom he fathered four daughters.
